Goodbye, Oppo

In a surprise move that some initially considered an April Fool’s hoax, consumer electronics firm Oppo has announced its intention to cease operating in the AV space.

This means that it will phase out production of its highly rated UDP-203 and UDP-205 4K-capable universal disc players, which have set the industry standard for some time now.

The brand’s volume business is in the smartphone industry, where its products enjoy strong market penetration in India and South-East Asia.

Shutting down its home entertainment operation will allow Oppo to focus on its mobile business, which is potentially more lucrative at a time when streaming is placing the market for physical media players under pressure.

According to Oppo existing products will continue to be supported through regular firmware updates, while customers can expect warranties to be honoured, and service facilities to remain available.
